Construction of the first two ES3000 battery locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia is progressing rapidly

Bulgarian company Express Service OOD is preparing to welcome a delegation from UZ this month for technical inspection and staff training.

Under a major contract, Ukrzaliznytsia will receive ten modern shunting locomotives over the next two years. This deal marks the largest battery-powered locomotive delivery in Express Service OOD’s history. The decision to partner with the Bulgarian manufacturer stems from a strategic shift away from outdated Soviet diesel technology.

Ukrzaliznytsia Invests in Green Technologies

Rising fuel costs and the need to reduce harmful emissions prompted Ukrzaliznytsia to redirect investments toward electric traction. With the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the company launched a modernization program.

The ES3000 was chosen due to its compliance with European environmental standards and its suitability for 1520 mm gauge track — a critical requirement for Ukraine’s rail network.

Staff Training and Operational Launch

Once the first locomotives arrive — expected within the next two months — Ukrzaliznytsia will begin training its engineers and mechanics. The training program includes both theoretical and practical modules focused on efficient servicing of the new equipment. From the first day of operation, the ES3000 locomotives will help reduce energy consumption and lower environmental impact.
