New York City Emergency Management confirmed that the fire forced widespread diversions across the Long Island Rail Road and related transit lines.

Crews struggled with nearly zero visibility while locating the source of the blaze. They battled flames for hours before successfully containing the situation, FDNY officials reported.

Three firefighters and one LIRR employee sustained injuries during the operation. All were treated quickly and removed from danger.

To protect passengers, LIRR trains were rerouted to Penn Station and other terminals. The MTA shut power to affected tracks to support emergency efforts and ensure safety.

Because of the intense blaze, key sections of the Grand Central rail network were temporarily deactivated. This helped first responders operate safely but added delays system-wide.

Officials stressed that no passengers required evacuation. Still, the overall LIRR service remained disrupted until 2:41 p.m. when power was gradually restored.

Fire investigation ongoing as city reviews response

Authorities continue investigating what sparked the incident. While the exact cause remains unclear, engineers are reviewing infrastructure to prevent future emergencies.

City leaders praised the fast work of emergency crews. Their efforts minimized harm and kept the situation from escalating further.

This fire marked one of the most severe disruptions to New York’s transit network this year. Officials urge travelers to remain alert for updated safety protocols.
