Upgrades will occur at Michigan Avenue, Dixon Boulevard, and West Highlands Drive in Cocoa. Additionally, Masterson Street, New Haven Avenue, and W.H. Jackson Street in Melbourne, as well as Holly Street in Micco, will receive safety enhancements.

Safety Efforts Are a Response to Recent Accidents

Two tragic accidents in January 2024 at W.H. Jackson Street resulted in three fatalities. Investigations revealed that drivers ignored lowered gates, highlighting the need for stricter safety measures. These incidents emphasize the grant’s importance for public safety improvements.

Part of a Nationwide Initiative for Safer Railways

The Federal Grant is part of a $1.1 billion nationwide program. This historic initiative supports 123 rail projects across the U.S., addressing over 1,000 highway-rail crossings to reduce accidents and save lives.

Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg described the program as transformative for cities and towns. He emphasized its role in reducing delays and improving transportation safety across communities nationwide.

Rail Safety Tips and Brightline Expansion

The Florida Department of Transportation reminds drivers to cross tracks only at designated points. Motorists should never bypass gates or stop vehicles on tracks. Remaining vigilant at crossings can prevent future tragedies.

Brightline also received a $33.79 million grant to extend its Orlando-to-Miami service. This expansion will increase train capacity and improve service frequency, benefiting travelers across the region.

By combining Federal Grant-funded safety measures with enhanced passenger services, Brevard County is set to experience significant transportation improvements in the coming years.
