The project involves constructing a roadway underpass, lowering Broadway Avenue by 24 feet beneath Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Additionally, new signals, gates, and raised medians will be installed at two nearby crossings to improve overall safety. These updates aim to eliminate delays caused by stopped trains and enhance traffic flow in the Highland Park neighborhood.
How Broadway Avenue Project Will Transform Traffic in Des Moines?
The total project cost is estimated at $23M. Federal funds will cover 50%, while previously secured federal funding will contribute 24%, leaving Polk County responsible for the remaining 26%. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2027 and conclude by December 2028, ensuring long-term benefits for the community.
In addition to improving safety, these changes will reduce congestion, benefiting both residents and businesses near Broadway Avenue. The upgrades align with broader federal efforts to modernize infrastructure and protect lives at railroad crossings nationwide.
