Earlier this month, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) released its Amtrak Daily Long-Distance Service Study. Commissioned by Congress in 2021, the study highlights over a dozen discontinued routes spanning more than 750 miles.

According to FRA, these routes meet current travel demands while improving access for underserved areas. Among them, only the Seattle-to-Denver route directly impacts Portland, including stops in Boise and Salt Lake City.

The proposed service from Portland to Pocatello, Idaho, would restore 773 miles of previously discontinued rail service. Amtrak operated the Pioneer line between Seattle and Denver for 20 years before budget cuts ended it in 1997.

Costs and Challenges of Amtrak’s Revival

Restoring the route requires significant funding for infrastructure and operations. The Seattle-to-Denver service includes 29 stations, 13 of which lack current passenger rail service.

Preliminary estimates suggest the project could cost $650–$840 million in fiscal year 2025. Infrastructure upgrades alone may require an additional $350–$450 million. Maintenance facilities and station construction could push total costs past $1 billion.

Benefits of Reviving Amtrak Service

This potential route would reconnect key communities, enhancing travel and economic opportunities for underserved areas. Advocates highlight rail’s environmental benefits, offering a sustainable alternative to car and air travel.

While this plan remains preliminary, federal leaders aim to prioritize connectivity and sustainability. Amtrak’s expansion could play a key role in modernizing transportation infrastructure nationwide.

Restoring Amtrak service between Portland and Boise would represent a meaningful step toward providing accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel solutions.
