The European Union has granted Ukraine the opportunity to directly access financing, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

'Paths to Solidarity' Initiative for Ukraine

Now Ukraine has the ability to submit applications for financing infrastructure projects related to the expansion of the core export routes known as the ‘Paths to Solidarity’,’ without the need for the participation of other European Union countries.

Adino Velyan, the EU Commissioner for Transport, explained: “For the first time, Ukraine can apply for financing for infrastructure projects along the ‘Paths to Solidarity’ initiative as an equal partner within the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program and do so under the same conditions as EU member states.”

This opportunity is also available to Moldova.

In May 2022, the European Commission unveiled a series of measures as part of the ‘Paths to Solidarity’ initiative, including support for border crossings with technical equipment and the updating of maps for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

In June of this year, Ukraine signed an agreement with the EU to participate in the CEF program, allowing it to participate in competitions for the development of transportation infrastructure alongside partners from EU member states with financial support from the EU.

The Ukrainian Restoration Agency is already engaged in joint projects with Poland, Hungary, and Romania under the CEF program, aimed at improving the capacity of border crossings between Ukraine and EU member countries.

The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a European Union fund established in 2014 for investments in infrastructure across the EU in the fields of transport, energy, digital technologies, and telecommunications, with the aim of strengthening connections between EU member states. The fund provides financing through grants, financial guarantees, and project bonds.
