The development follows a 2024 study that reviewed options for modernizing the historic terminal. Hawkins\Brown is now leading a feasibility study to redesign the space and more than double capacity without major structural disruption.

Eurostar expansion to enhance station operations

The upgrade will roll out in three phases. Phase One will improve security and border processes to boost hourly throughput by 2,700 passengers within four years, all within the current station layout.

By 2028, Phase Two will transform the international zone and better link it to the concourse. These changes aim to improve flow and comfort while raising hourly capacity from 2,000 to nearly 5,000 passengers.

Phase Three will examine long-term growth options, such as moving the arrivals area to the upper level. Designers will prioritize efficient space usage while preserving the building’s architectural identity.

Eurostar prepares for future passenger growth

The station redesign coincides with Europe’s shift toward greener transport. Eurostar projects passenger growth from 11 million to 35 million annually by 2040, according to research from London St. Pancras Highspeed.

To support this increase, the operator plans to add direct services to Geneva and Frankfurt and expand its train fleet in the early 2030s. These changes reflect a broader strategy to promote high-speed, sustainable travel across the continent.

Eurostar’s Chief Safety and Stations Officer, Simon Lejeune, said the initiative will enable future expansion and maintain service excellence as demand grows.

The design and feasibility phase will conclude by late 2025. Detailed construction work for Phase Two is set to begin thereafter, with completion scheduled for the end of 2028.
