European Commission Approves €300 Million Rail Plan for Slovakia
25.07.2025
The European Commission approved a €300 million scheme in Slovakia to support new rail freight wagons and accelerate the shift from road to rail transportation. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The plan allows operators to receive up to €200 million, covering 50% of acquisition costs. These subsidies aim to encourage investments that companies would likely delay without financial support.

Beneficiaries include rail operators and wagon owners in Slovakia. The initiative is designed to strengthen rail competitiveness, cut emissions, and reduce congestion, aligning with the EU’s sustainability goals.

Rail Freight in Slovakia Shows Strong Performance
Rail accounts for nearly 20% of freight in Slovakia, well above the EU average of 12%. Maintaining this lead requires ongoing modernization and infrastructure upgrades to meet future transport demands.
The market is dominated by ZSSK Cargo, while international players such as Rail Cargo Carrier, Metrans, and PKP Cargo International operate actively, particularly in cross-border services.
Key Hubs in Slovakia Drive Intermodal Growth
The Dunajská Streda terminal, managed by Metrans, remains a vital hub for intermodal logistics. With EU-backed funding, operators using this terminal can modernize fleets and expand capacity to support higher volumes of freight.
By implementing this €300 million initiative, the European Commission demonstrates its commitment to sustainable transport in Slovakia and to increasing rail freight’s share across Europe.
