EU Funds Rail Electrification to Boost Moldova Connectivity
05.07.2025
The European Union has approved funding to electrify the first railway segment in Moldova, advancing the country’s integration with the European transport system through this strategic infrastructure upgrade. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The 25-kilometre Iași–Ungheni rail link, covering both Romanian and Moldovan territory, will be modernized and electrified under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The project includes the cross-border bridge over the Prut River.

Submitted in January 2025 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the project was selected from 258 proposals. It is one of 94 initiatives granted non-repayable funding within a €2.8 billion CEF investment round.
Moldova Rail Upgrade Will Improve Performance and Emissions
The electrification of the Iași–Ungheni route will raise operational speeds to 140 km/h for passenger trains and 80 km/h for freight. This will cut travel time, reduce fuel use, and lower maintenance costs.
By shifting transport from road to rail, Moldova will also curb carbon emissions. The project supports broader EU climate goals and reflects the country’s focus on clean, efficient transportation.
Strategic Timetable for Moldova’s Rail Modernization
The financing agreement is expected in October 2025. Construction work is set to start in June 2026 and end by June 2028. Upon completion, the line will strengthen economic ties with Romania and the EU.
This railway upgrade is a turning point for Moldova’s outdated infrastructure. It shows clear progress toward deeper European cooperation and sustainable regional growth.
