EMA meticulously oversees the selection process, spanning years and involving various companies. Local and international firms compete, meeting strict criteria to earn licenses consistently.

Last year, EMA confidently grants NVOCC licenses to Panafric Global and others. These companies eagerly prepare to break ESL’s market control effectively.

Fraol Tafa, EMA’s Deputy Director, confirms EDR’s thorough assessment for readiness now. He highlights infrastructure, technology, and trade networks as key factors annually.

“We successfully expand the multimodal transport sector with more participants,” Fraol announces. His statement reflects EMA’s dedication to nurturing new entrants yearly.

Ethio-Djibouti Railway Boosts Operations

EDR, a partnership between Ethiopia and Djibouti, begins commercial operations in 2018. Since then, it significantly cuts freight transit times to under 20 hours.

The company efficiently handles containerized cargo, bulk goods, and passenger services daily. Additionally, it manages Roll-on/Roll-off shipments, enhancing regional capabilities consistently.

Mintesinot Yohannes, EDR’s Logistics Director, expresses excitement about this achievement today. “We relentlessly pursue this license and now prepare for operations,” she declares.

Djibouti owns a 25% stake in EDR, boosting efficiency in the logistics framework. Thus, this entry strengthens competitiveness across the region’s transport sector substantially.

As an NVOCC operator, EDR complements ESL, which also functions in Djibouti now. Industry experts eagerly anticipate this market shift after years of waiting.

This progress marks a bold step in Ethiopia’s quest to modernize logistics swiftly. Furthermore, it cultivates a dynamic and competitive environment regionally.

Ethio-Djibouti Railway Engineers Excel

Ethiopian engineers skillfully restore locomotives and wagons out of service for years. CEO Takele Uma proudly announces this breakthrough in maintenance recently.

“Our engineers independently repair the fleet, achieving a historic milestone,” Takele proclaims. Over four months, they revive 16 locomotives and 200 wagons successfully.

This effort boosts EDR’s fleet, increasing locomotives from 9 to 25 this year. Moreover, it raises the wagon count from 789 to 978, enhancing capacity.

Previously, a Chinese firm manages repairs, training local engineers for future independence. Now, their expertise shines, handling technical operations adeptly.

Takele emphasizes this moment’s importance, heralding new opportunities in logistics today. “Our railway enters a transformative phase with this achievement,” he asserts.

Experts note this success elevates EDR’s capacity and signals self-reliance in Ethiopia. Consequently, it ushers in an era of innovation for rail annually.
