Rail Baltica is advancing rapidly in Estonia, as the country signed two major contracts totaling approximately $789 million for constructing key segments of the future high-speed railway. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Rail Baltica project will deliver modern railway infrastructure across the region, with 85% of the costs in Estonia financed by European Union funds.

First Rail Baltica contract covers major route segments

A $428 million contract was signed with a consortium including GRK Eesti, GRK Suomi, AS Merko Ehitus Eesti, NGE CONTRACTING, Sweco Finland, Sweco Sverige, and TSO SAS.

The contractors will install track superstructure on the Tallinn–Ülemiste–Tootsi section and build the trackbed and superstructure from Tootsi to Pärnu.

Leading the consortium is Finland’s GRK Suomi, which actively operates across the Baltics and Scandinavia. This agreement marks a significant milestone for construction progress.

Second Rail Baltica contract includes section to the border

The second contract, worth $361 million, was awarded to a consortium led by French firm Bouygues Travaux Publics.

Other members include Budimex, INGEROP Conseil et Ingenierie (ICI), KMG Infra, and WSP Finland — all experienced in delivering international infrastructure projects.

These companies will design and build the Pärnu–Ikla section, which connects Estonia to Latvia. The work is expected to be completed on schedule.

Construction is scheduled for completion by 2030

In March 2025, Tariston signed a contract to build the Selja–Tootsi section.

The same company had earlier secured the contract for the Hagudi–Alu stretch.

Estonia plans to complete Rail Baltica construction by 2030. However, concerns remain that delays in Latvia may affect the overall timeline for the project.
