19.09.2024
The European Rail Freight Association (ERFA) has outlined the key development priorities for the sector over the next five years, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

In its address to European policymakers and authorities, the association emphasized the need for a unified railway space, improved competition, and infrastructure support.

These steps aim to strengthen the position of rail transport in freight across the continent.
ERFA’s main goals for the period from 2024 to 2029 are: stable infrastructure conditions, the creation of a Single European Railway Area (SERA), and improved conditions for market competition.
According to the association, achieving these goals is possible only through a comprehensive approach, including financial and political support.
To implement these priorities, ERFA proposes four key action areas.
The first is the modernization and development of railway infrastructure, as well as the completion of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which will enhance connectivity between countries.
The second area focuses on revising rules and conditions for infrastructure access charges, creating incentives to shift freight to rail.
The third important element is the implementation of the European Train Control System (ETCS). ERFA emphasizes that technical changes to this system should be minimal to avoid implementation difficulties.
The fourth area is related to the creation of SERA, which should be accompanied by reducing bureaucratic barriers, simplifying language requirements, and streamlining certification procedures for rolling stock and operators.
ERFA believes that a comprehensive approach to infrastructure modernization and enhancing market competition will be key to the sustainable development of the rail freight sector.
