Arriving at the Port of Dar es Salaam on December 30, 2023, the locomotives and cars will soon undergo testing on the newly electrified line with a 25 kV AC power supply.
These acquisitions are part of a large order, including 17 electric locomotives from Hyundai Rotem and 59 cars from SSRST.
The range of cars includes business class (13 cars accommodating 45 passengers each) and economy class (14 cars with a capacity of 78 people).
Three additional cars, including a special one for the president’s trips, are expected in February 2024.
Notably, TRC has also received 30 double-decker passenger cars previously operated by DB Regio in Germany.
After extensive refurbishment in Mukran and repainting in traditional orange and white colors, these cars contribute to Tanzania’s updated rolling stock.
The project also involves an order for 10 electric trains from Hyundai Rotem, each capable of carrying 640 passengers. These electric trains are scheduled for delivery to Tanzania in October 2024.
All these rail transport improvements aim to provide more comfortable and efficient passenger transportation, fostering the country’s economic development.
The overall picture indicates Tanzania’s commitment to a modern, sustainable, and convenient railway system, supporting the country’s growth and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
