EIB May Finance Railway Modernization in Mauritania
02.06.2025
The European Investment Bank is reviewing a project in which railway modernization in Mauritania plays a key role in expanding SNIM’s mining logistics. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The state-owned company SNIM operates a 700 km railway line connecting the mining areas in Zouérat to the port of Nouadhibou. This route is strategically important for iron ore exports.

The $512 million project includes upgrading the main line, building new stations, and extending the route by 42 km to two new mining sites. EIB may provide $125 million in funding through the EU’s Global Europe (NDICI) and EFSD+ programs.
Modernization of Rolling Stock and Infrastructure
SNIM plans to purchase modern locomotives and freight wagons, along with establishing a full-service maintenance base. In addition, the company will invest in equipment for rail repair and routine infrastructure upkeep.
This approach will improve transport reliability and ensure continuous export operations. It will also reduce operating costs and increase the overall efficiency of the rail system.
Modernization with Climate Resilience in Focus
As part of its sustainability goals, SNIM will build a 12 MWh solar power plant equipped with photovoltaic panels. This will cut emissions and reduce dependence on traditional energy sources.
The African Development Bank is providing technical support to assess climate change risks, helping the project adapt to long-term environmental shifts.
Railway modernization will not only enhance Mauritania’s export capacity but also strengthen the region’s ecological resilience. This is a long-term investment in transport security and the country’s economic independence.
