29.07.2025
EIB Grants a €115M loan to Adif AV to redevelop Barcelona-Sants station, aiming to increase passenger capacity and improve connectivity within the European TEN-T network. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
EIB Grants Funding to Boost Strategic Transport Hub
The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €115 million loan to Spain’s Adif AV to upgrade and expand Barcelona-Sants, a key station in the TEN-T network.

This initiative supports increasing rail demand and strengthens intermodal integration with metro, bus, and taxi systems.

The EIB Grants aim to transform the station into a modern, high-capacity hub that improves both national and international mobility.
Adif AV plans to construct a new terminal for high-speed services and enlarge the commuter area near Plaça dels Països Catalans.
Restoration of the square will follow the original architectural plan and include enhanced ventilation and emergency systems.
The project also improves access to mobile and fixed communications, ensuring better connectivity for travelers.
EIB Grants Support Long-Term Rail Infrastructure Goals
Adif AV and the EIB share a long-standing partnership centered on sustainable rail development.
In January 2024, the EIB granted a €350 million loan to Adif and Adif AV to modernize both conventional and high-speed lines.
By expanding Barcelona-Sants, the project increases terminal space by 30%, easing congestion and supporting multimodal links.
This aligns with EU climate and mobility goals by encouraging rail over less eco-friendly transport modes.
The EIB Grants reinforce the EU’s commitment to green infrastructure, urban accessibility, and cross-border transport integration.
Investing in Barcelona-Sants helps future-proof a core node in the European rail network.
This EIB-backed modernization enhances Spain’s rail infrastructure while addressing rising passenger volumes.
With strategic investment and long-term planning, Barcelona-Sants is poised to become a model for sustainable urban mobility in Europe.
