Egypt Launches Free Train Service for Sudanese Repatriation
21.07.2025
Egypt will start a free train service on July 23 to assist Sudanese refugees returning home voluntarily, offering medical care and logistical support throughout the entire journey. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The National Railways Authority announced that Train No. 1940, an air-conditioned third-class train, will leave Cairo at 11 a.m. and arrive in Aswan at 11 p.m. the same day.

From Aswan, passengers will continue by bus to High Dam Port before crossing into Sudan through the Arqeen border point. This coordinated effort ensures safe and comfortable travel for those heading home.

Egypt Strengthens Humanitarian Support for Sudanese Citizens
Officials confirmed the initiative is managed jointly by the Egyptian Ministries of Transport and Foreign Affairs, working closely with Sudanese authorities. Onboard medical teams and staff will provide assistance during the 12-hour trip.
This program forms part of broader repatriation efforts following improved security conditions in Sudan. The International Organization for Migration reports that voluntary returns have increased since early 2025, encouraging displaced citizens to go back.
Egypt Highlights Regional Cooperation and Migration Management
Hosting an estimated 5.5 million Sudanese nationals, Egypt sees this operation as a humanitarian responsibility and a symbol of bilateral ties. Offering this service for free eliminates financial obstacles for refugees planning their return.
Authorities also noted that future trains may be scheduled if demand continues to rise. Maintaining coordination with international agencies will remain a priority to ensure safe and organized movement across borders.
This initiative reflects Egypt’s commitment to regional stability and humanitarian aid, while signaling progress toward peace in Sudan that could reduce displacement across Northeast Africa.
