A diesel train from the 168 series covered the distance in 42 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. These successful tests confirmed the route’s readiness, and regular service will begin following the testing phase in 2025. Notably, the East West Rail project aims to improve transportation across the region, benefiting both residents and business travelers alike.

A New Chapter in the East West Rail Project’s Development

The East West Rail project, valued at £1.2 billion, involved extensive construction over a 70-kilometer railway section. In addition to a new rail line, the project includes a modern drainage system and the installation of 130 kilometers of fencing.

Key infrastructure improvements also include five viaducts and twelve pedestrian bridges, enhancing passenger convenience and safety. The initiative required refurbishing 27 bridges and building a new station with parking in Winslow. New high platforms at Bletchley Station further improve accessibility and convenience for all travelers.

Regional Benefits of the East West Rail Project

Work on the East West Rail project began in November 2021, and the completion of its first phase shows significant progress. East West Rail not only restores passenger rail connections between Oxford and Cambridge but also creates new economic development opportunities for the entire region.
