Italy’s Rail Infrastructure to Undergo Major Maintenance Work

Approximately €1.6 billion is dedicated to extraordinary maintenance projects across the rail network. These include station upgrades and structural enhancements needed to improve safety and service performance.

An additional €500 million will be allocated to support operational management, ensuring the system runs efficiently and remains responsive to passenger demand and logistical needs.

MIT and RFI received formal approval after presenting the revised plan to the Interministerial Committee for Economic Planning and Sustainable Development (CIPESS). Rising inflation and supply costs influenced the need for updated figures.

Workforce Expansion to Support Italy’s Rail Infrastructure

RFI also plans to expand its workforce through a national hiring program. This effort is designed to boost maintenance capabilities, improve technical response times, and maintain service continuity.

Officials emphasized that reinforcing Italy’s rail infrastructure is essential to promoting sustainable travel and reducing environmental impact. These goals align with the country’s broader mobility transition strategy.

By investing in infrastructure resilience and workforce development, RFI aims to increase service quality, safety, and reliability for travelers and freight operators across the country.

The investment reflects Italy’s long-term vision for a greener, more modern rail system. Authorities view this funding as crucial to strengthening public transport, reducing emissions, and driving economic development.
