Dutch Railways (NS) has ordered 60 new double-deck trains for intercity traffic from the Spanish manufacturer CAF for around 600 million euros. The order is divided into 30 four-car units and another 30 six-car units, for a total of 30,000 new seats. The first trains are expected to enter service in 2028. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to RailTech.

NS

NS aims to use the new CAF low floor trains as a replacement for part of its current fleet of DDZ double deck trains. The trains will operate at a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour, which should allow NS to reduce travel times in its future schedule, as current trains have a speed of 140 kilometers per hour.

NS previously worked with CAF on the design, development and construction of its 118 Sprinter ‘New Generation’ (SNG) commuter trains, which have been in use since 2018. Another batch of 88 SNG’s followed two years later. The two sets of trains represented a combined order value of more than 900 million euros.

In total, NS has invested 4.7 billion in refurbished and new rolling stock in recent years, while also placing large orders with Stadler and Alstom. Alstom’s new ICNG intercity trains are due to debut next year. From 2025, a cross-border version of the ICNG will enter service on the route to Belgium, followed by the newly announced CAF trains on Dutch tracks in 2028.
