Diesel locomotive 2TE116 converted into a hybrid locomotive in Mongolia
10.09.2025
In Mongolia, specialists reequipped a 2TE116 diesel locomotive as a hybrid locomotive, reducing fuel consumption by 60-70% and the amount of emissions, enhancing the effectiveness and environmental-friendliness of haulage along railways.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Technical features of the hybrid locomotive
The locomotive was powered with two 400 kW diesel engines as well as two 440 kW battery packs. The hybrid locomotive can use the batteries only, but there is also the combination mode with diesel engines as required.

At the same time, the new system improves the effectiveness of operations. Therefore, the modernization illustrates how new technologies can be introduced onto railways while meeting the current environmental standards.
Importance of the project in Mongolia’s railways
The project lasted about one year and was implemented with a Chinese company. However, the main result was lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, which is crucial for the country’s ecology.
At the same time, experts believe that the experience can be scaled up. So the 2TE116 conversion into the hybrid locomotive can become the framework of the future modernizations of the fleet of Mongolia’s railways.
What is the advantage of a hybrid locomotive in Mongolia?
A hybrid locomotive decreases diesel fuel use by 60–70%, reduces emissions, and is more efficient, helping to build a more sustainable transport system.
What major technical alterations were introduced in the 2TE116 diesel locomotive?
Two 400 kW diesel engines powered it, as well as two 440 kW battery packs. The locomotive could use the battery power alone or with both in hybrid mode.
How many months did the development of Mongolia’s first hybrid locomotive take?
The modernization work was finished in about one year. Under this work, Mongolia gained valuable experience in future upgrading the railway rolling stock.
