An agreement for an initial tranche of €20 million was formally signed during an event held in Matera, where EIB Vice-President Ms. Gelsomina Vigliotti and Mermec Group Chief Financial Officer Mr. Michele Costa came together.
This significant development occurred as part of an event organized by the EIB and the local business organization Confindustria Puglia e Basilicata, aimed at promoting European Union (EU) financing opportunities for companies operating in the Puglia and Basilicata regions of Italy.
The initial financing from the EIB is earmarked to support Mermec in creating innovative signalling platforms for autonomous trains, as well as advanced solutions for more efficient diagnostics, rolling stock maintenance, and railway infrastructure.
With the assistance of EIB resources, Mermec will also develop solutions for integrated railway asset management through remote data collection.
These novel solutions will leverage advanced connectivity technology, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the efficiency of diagnostics and maintenance, ultimately bolstering rail operations’ safety and sustainability.
These research, development, and innovation activities are scheduled to take place in Italy from 2023 to 2025.
