Deutsche Bahn Restores Train Services After Severe Storm Disruptions in Germany
07.01.2025
Severe storms caused major disruptions to Deutsche Bahn services across northern and western Germany. Crews worked to clear debris and restore operations, but delays remain in certain areas. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Deutsche Bahn Faces Storm-Related Challenges in Northern Germany
Severe weather affected Deutsche Bahn’s railway operations earlier this week, disrupting key routes. High winds and heavy rain led to fallen trees, blocking tracks and halting trains temporarily.

Clean-up teams quickly responded to clear debris and repair damaged infrastructure along affected lines. Deutsche Bahn confirmed that most services resumed by Tuesday morning, though delays persisted.
The Hamburg-Berlin ICE line experienced a temporary shutdown on Monday when a tree fell on the track. Deutsche Bahn reopened one track late Monday night, restoring limited train traffic.
Deutsche Bahn Works to Restore Full Services Across Regions
In Schleswig-Holstein, Deutsche Bahn regional trains faced severe delays on Monday, lasting several hours. Reduced speeds continued for RE6 trains between Hamburg-Altona and Westerland, causing further disruptions.
Trains on the RE7 and RE70 lines resumed normal operations by Tuesday morning. Regional services between Ahrensburg and Bargteheide restarted overnight without additional interruptions.
In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and Lower Saxony, Deutsche Bahn largely restored operations, but isolated disruptions remained. Some sections relied on single-track operations or replacement bus services.
Long-distance Deutsche Bahn routes also saw delays and diversions, particularly near Cologne, Aachen, and Düsseldorf. Passengers were advised to check schedules frequently for updates about weather-related changes.
The German Weather Service (DWD) predicted further strong winds and storms, especially along coasts and mountains. Gusts up to 85 km/h and potential hurricane-force winds threatened specific regions.
Snowfall above 400 to 700 meters added further challenges for Deutsche Bahn’s restoration efforts. Wetter conditions persisted nationwide, leading to ongoing safety concerns and operational adjustments.
Deutsche Bahn recommended travelers plan trips carefully and stay informed through official channels. Authorities emphasized public safety, urging passengers to allow extra time for travel.
Weather forecasts suggested more snow at lower elevations later this week, complicating infrastructure recovery. Deutsche Bahn continued repair operations and implemented contingency plans to minimize disruptions.
