Destruction of Railway Tracks in Ukraine: Impact of the Full-Scale Invasion

Since the full-scale Russian invasion began, nearly 10,000 kilometers of railway tracks were destroyed in Ukraine. This extensive damage has impacted Ukraine’s infrastructure, leading to significant financial losses nationwide. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
According to a report by the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), over 507 kilometers of railway track were damaged from February 2022 to January 2024.

Combat operations destroyed 126 train stations, with 55 located in Ukraine-controlled territory, while the remaining facilities are in temporarily occupied areas. In total, more than 5,500 buildings and nearly 4,000 facilities owned by “Ukrzaliznytsia” have suffered significant damage.
Ukraine also lost a significant number of “Ukrzaliznytsia” vehicles, failing to evacuate them from occupied territories on time. These assets are considered lost or destroyed due to the aggressor’s actions. The total direct losses to Ukraine’s railway infrastructure are estimated at $4.3 billion.
Ongoing Restoration of Railway Tracks
Despite extensive destruction, Ukrainian railway workers are actively restoring damaged railway tracks across the country. Since the full-scale invasion began, they have successfully repaired over 3,600 kilometers of railway tracks and restored 41 station buildings.
Future Plans: Expanding Railway Track Repair Efforts
“Ukrzaliznytsia” continues its restoration efforts and is not stopping at current achievements. By the end of the year, the company plans to repair another 1,200 kilometers of railway tracks, further enhancing transportation connections nationwide.
Previously, “Ukrzaliznytsia” reported that over the past eight months, they successfully repaired more than 700 kilometers of railway tracks despite ongoing conflict.
