Denver RTD Backs Planning for Front Range Passenger Rail
30.06.2025
Denver RTD has voted to participate in planning the Front Range Passenger Rail, a project that could finally connect Denver to Fort Collins through expanded commuter train service by 2029. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The agency signed an intergovernmental agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Front Range Passenger Rail District. This move aims to develop a detailed plan and secure funding for the future route.

Although Denver RTD previously committed to the Northwest Rail (B-Line) between Denver and Longmont, high costs delayed progress until the 2040s. The new project offers a faster alternative to achieve those transit goals.

Several board members approved the agreement with caution, citing budget concerns. However, RTD Chairman Julien Bouquet emphasized the importance of exploring whether the new plan is feasible and financially realistic.
Colorado’s state government has already introduced a rental car fee to help finance both the Front Range and Mountain Rail lines. That funding will support planning and infrastructure costs across both projects.

Thanks to a recent deal with Union Pacific, the Mountain Rail initiative linking Denver and Craig is advancing. The first segment may start operating by 2026, depending on readiness and investment outcomes.
By joining this multilateral rail partnership, Denver RTD aligns itself with Colorado’s broader vision for intercity transit and reduced road congestion. The step also offers a path to honor past commitments in a cost-effective way.
Although uncertainty remains about long-term capital, the project shows strong momentum. Officials hope that shared planning and early-stage coordination will streamline development and reduce delays.
