Mark Philips, CEO of the Rail Safety & Standards Board (RSSB), urged leaders to act before issues arise. “Don’t prepare for if, prepare for when,” he advised, reinforcing the inevitability of digital threats.
Speakers also included George Bearfield, Director of Health, Safety, and Cyber Security at Rock Rail. Alongside him, Tom Wild from Eversholt Rail UK Ltd. shared practical insights on securing infrastructure.
Arinder Badyal, Head of Information Security at Transport UK, called for urgent, continuous vigilance. “Act now to avoid future regrets,” he said, stressing a firm stance against growing vulnerabilities.

George Copeland, Northern’s Digital Programme Manager, introduced a resilient framework for digital security in rail operations. Covering numerous digital assets, his plan includes five stages: identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover.
Marc Silverwood, Northern’s On-Board Systems Manager, emphasized the value of shared knowledge in cyber resilience. “In this sector, sharing knowledge builds strength,” he stated, promoting open communication as a defense.
