Reports indicate that quartz from western North Carolina supplies over 70% of the semiconductor industry. The rail reopening allows Quartz Corp. to continue efficient transportation of critical materials.
However, sections of the Blue Ridge Subdivision remain out of service due to flood-related damage. The rail line from Quartz Corp.’s spur to Erwin, Tennessee, is still under reconstruction.
CSX Continues Repairs on the Clinchfield Line
Crews are reinforcing the roadbed and rebuilding a vital bridge at Poplar, North Carolina. A specific timeline for reopening this section has not yet been confirmed by officials.
Currently, freight bound for Spruce Pine is routed through Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Bostic Yard in Bostic, North Carolina. Rock trains and maintenance equipment also use this alternative route.
Meanwhile, CSX ran its first work train over the Chestoa Bridge in Unaka Springs, Tennessee. The bridge had accumulated debris after powerful floodwaters battered its steel girder structure.
