CRRC train specifications

The DDEMU2 has already passed a series of tests in the Czech Republic, and now specialists are checking its performance on Hungary’s railway infrastructure. These tests are essential because, without them, the train cannot be deployed on routes in Austria, Germany, and Slovakia.

CRRC designed the train according to EU interoperability standards (TSI). It supports multiple signaling systems and can operate on 15 and 25 kV networks at frequencies of 16.7 and 50 Hz, making it suitable for cross-border services.

The six-car train measures 158 meters in length, reaches speeds of up to 200 km/h, and accommodates 1,280 passengers, including 571 seated. Moreover, the use of lightweight aluminum bodies and components made of carbon and glass-carbon fiber keeps the train’s weight only 10% higher than that of single-deck models.

CRRC’s prospects in Europe

The collaboration began in 2019 when Westbahn sold 17 Stadler Rail KISS 1 and KISS 2 trains to Deutsche Bahn. Following the sale, Westbahn launched a tender for new rolling stock. CRRC offered to supply the full fleet, but the contract for 15 KISS 3 trains went to Stadler Rail.

However, the Chinese manufacturer secured a leasing deal for four trains, which are now undergoing testing ahead of commercial service. The new technology promises to ease congestion on busy routes and provide passengers with more seats and greater comfort, especially on the Vienna–Salzburg line.

Industry experts note that expanding cooperation with CRRC creates new opportunities for European operators. Innovative technology and high energy efficiency make the DDEMU2 a competitive choice in the increasingly crowded European rail market.

What is the CRRC DDEMU2 train?

It is a double-deck electric train, 158 meters long, with a capacity of 1,280 passengers and a top speed of 200 km/h.

Will CRRC trains operate on European routes?

Yes, once testing is complete, the trains will enter service in Austria, Germany, and Slovakia.

When will CRRC complete testing in Hungary?

The tests are expected to finish in the coming months, with regular operations planned to begin in 2025.
