14.04.2025
Copenhagen is launching a major project to build a new metro line M5, which will be implemented in two phases. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

First Phase of Metro Line M5 Construction in Copenhagen
The Copenhagen authorities, together with the Danish government, have approved the construction plan for metro line M5. The first phase includes the construction of five underground and one above-ground station.

The cost of this phase is approximately $2.71 billion. The opening is scheduled for 2036. The M5 route will connect the central railway station to the artificial island of Lynetteholm.
The project includes convenient transfers to all existing metro lines. In the future, if funding becomes available, the line will be extended to Østerport Station.
Second Phase and Its Impact on Copenhagen’s Transport System
The second phase includes three above-ground stations and will cost $566 million (3.9 billion Danish kroner). Its completion is planned for 2045.
The new line will improve transport service in remote areas, including Amager Island, as well as in new residential districts. It is projected that by 2050, the line will carry 91,000 passengers daily, increasing to 134,000 by 2070.
This will raise the metro system’s overall daily ridership by 78,000 in 2050 and by 124,000 in 2070.
In September 2024, operator Metroselskabet signed a design contract for Line M5 with a consortium of Ramboll, SYSTRA, and Gottlieb Paludan Architects.
By the end of 2024, Copenhagen’s four existing metro lines served 126 million passengers.
The passenger satisfaction rate reached 96%, highlighting the high quality of the city’s public transportation system.
