Colas Rail UK Completes Coventry CVLR Demonstrator Track Project

Colas Rail UK has completed construction of the Coventry CVLR test track, delivering a greener and faster light rail solution for small and medium-sized cities in the UK. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The 220-meter track, built along Greyfriars and Queen Victoria Road, presents a new benchmark for sustainable, cost-efficient light rail infrastructure. Industry experts and the public have already expressed strong interest.

Construction began in March 2025. Crews removed the central road divider and reconfigured traffic routes to make room for the new system. Track slab and rail installation followed, ending on time by mid-May.

Colas Rail UK showcased its ability to deliver high-precision rail work under live conditions. The project demonstrates a value-engineered model that saves time and reduces disruption.
Jim O’Boyle, a Coventry City Council member, said CVLR could revolutionize transport in urban areas. “Colas Rail showed how quickly the system can be laid. Feedback from the public and professionals has been extremely positive,” he added.
He emphasized that the CVLR is not just a pilot—it’s a citywide vision prioritizing cost, climate, and community. He believes the system will generate new jobs and strengthen Coventry’s green economy.
Colas Rail UK Supports Future Development and Innovation
Project Manager Hamish Falconer noted that delivering the track in a live environment marks a major milestone. He praised the team’s accuracy, speed, and commitment to innovation.
Looking ahead, Colas Rail UK plans to build on this success through deeper collaboration with the city. The company also expanded its fleet in June 2024 by acquiring two new 09-4×4/4s tampers from Plasser & Theurer.
This investment supports long-term growth in both Coventry’s light rail network and national rail development, reinforcing Colas Rail UK’s position as a forward-thinking infrastructure leader.
