22.06.2025
CMAP has awarded Metra over $104 million in federal grants to support sustainable transportation and critical station improvements in the Chicago region. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The funding comes from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program under CMAP’s 2026–2030 transportation plan. It will finance three major infrastructure projects.

A total of $80 million will go toward renovating the historic Van Buren Street Station on the Metra Electric Line. The project includes waterproofing, new elevators, digital signage, and warming shelters.
An additional $23.7 million will be used to purchase three electric switch locomotives. These will replace aging diesel units and help cut emissions across the network.
Another $800,000 will be allocated for upgrades at Edgebrook Station on the Milwaukee District North Line. The improvements aim to enhance accessibility and passenger comfort.
Metra CEO Jim Derwinski said these initiatives reflect CMAP’s mission to reduce congestion and pollution while supporting sustainable public transit in Chicago.
Senator Dick Durbin praised the effort to reduce diesel emissions and improve system safety. Senator Tammy Duckworth highlighted the upgrades’ impact on accessibility and inclusivity.
CMAP Invests in Van Buren Street Station Renovation
Opened in 1896, Van Buren Street Station suffers from years of water infiltration and outdated facilities. The new work will fully modernize the station for future generations.
Total costs for the project are estimated at $134.5 million, funded by CMAP, the BUILD program, Urbanized Area Formula Funding, and local contributions. Construction will begin in late 2028.
CMAP Supports Electric Locomotives and Edgebrook Upgrades
By adding electric locomotives, Metra continues transitioning toward cleaner rail operations. These new units will reduce emissions and improve system reliability.
Edgebrook Station’s modernization will increase ADA accessibility and improve overall user experience. CMAP’s backing ensures these improvements reach underserved communities.
