China’s Yangpu Port Embarks on Ambitious Global Container Shipping Expansion
13.01.2025
China’s Yangpu Port, located on Hainan Island, is poised to become a leading container hub. With Cosco’s active involvement, the port is expanding routes and building global trade connections. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Expanding Yangpu Port’s Global Reach
China’s Yangpu Port has set ambitious plans to connect Asia with global trade routes. Eastward, it links with North and South America; westward, it targets Europe and the Indian subcontinent. Southward, Yangpu is strengthening ties with Southeast Asia, while northward, it enhances feeder links to East Asian ports. This comprehensive strategy highlights its goal to serve as an international gateway.

In 2024, container volumes increased by 9%, reaching 2 million TEU. Analysts predict this growth could support small, direct long-haul services. Infrastructure upgrades are already underway, with five berths designed for ships carrying up to 20,000 TEU. One berth is expected to be operational by the year’s end, accelerating Yangpu’s expansion.
Infrastructure Investments Fuel Growth at China’s Yangpu Port
Officials confirmed significant progress in Yangpu’s infrastructure, including the completion of its main wharf. Construction of connecting roads is ongoing to improve logistics. Key exports—textiles, garments, and electronics—position Yangpu as a trade hub for Asia.
Chen Yang, mayor of Danzhou, envisions stronger ties with ports like Singapore and Peru’s Chancay. He projects annual container throughput to reach 5 million TEU by 2028. The Ministry of Transport’s 2024–2035 Master Plan aims to boost this figure to 12 million TEU by 2035.
China’s Yangpu Port exemplifies strategic planning and ambition. With Cosco’s involvement and rising container volumes, it’s set to become a key player in global trade, linking major regions seamlessly.
