The system will transmit alerts directly to the CTA Control Centre for immediate response and action. High-tech cameras will record footage in real-time, allowing for rapid identification of potential security threats.
Captured video data will be processed through a specialized device designed to detect unauthorized access within the railway infrastructure. After analysis, collected information will be stored for further evaluation and system improvements.
CTA receives approximately 2,000 right-of-way intrusion reports annually, with many incidents caused by passengers retrieving lost mobile devices. This new detection system aims to reduce such occurrences and improve response efficiency.
Chicago’s Transit Innovation Studio Leads Technological Advancements
STV will oversee this 12-month pilot program, focusing on system accuracy, intrusion detection rates, and response times. Regular performance reviews will track false alarms, system uptime, and the overall effectiveness of the technology.
CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the agency’s commitment to safety innovation. She emphasized that leveraging technology is essential for improving passenger experiences and ensuring transit security.
The CTA Innovation Studio fosters partnerships with private firms to address key transit challenges. Its 2024 launch introduced three problem statements, inviting companies to propose advancements in safety, operations, and customer satisfaction.
STV, a leading engineering and consulting firm, brings extensive experience in transportation infrastructure. The company has previously collaborated with CTA on projects like designing a modern maintenance facility for the transit network.
Senior Vice President Kitts Christov highlighted STV’s dedication to improving transit safety. He noted their partnership with Derq, an AI-powered analytics company specializing in real-time right-of-way monitoring solutions.
Derq’s predictive analytics platform enables rapid detection of potential threats, helping create a safer and more connected transit network. The integration of AI-driven monitoring ensures enhanced security and improved operational efficiency.
The $60,000 funding will cover hardware costs, installation, software customization, and system integration at the two designated rail stations. STV’s pilot program will focus on optimizing real-time intrusion detection and refining technical capabilities.
By deploying this advanced detection system, CTA aims to set new safety standards and minimize unauthorized access incidents. A successful trial may lead to broader implementation across the Chicago transit network, strengthening passenger security.
CTA officials remain dedicated to exploring innovative solutions that improve transportation reliability and efficiency. Continued collaborations with technology firms will drive future advancements, ensuring a safer and smarter transit experience for all.
