This project focuses on the digitalization and automation of freight wagon inspection using artificial intelligence.

Pakistani Railways Launches New Platforms Using Chinese Technology

DIMI has been included in the German federal program Future Rail Freight Transport and has received funding of 1 million euros from the German Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV).

Two German organizations are involved in the project: the Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), which is part of the Fraunhofer Society, and SGKV, a company specializing in multimodal transport research.

The project’s goal is to expedite the inspection of platform wagons and the multimodal units they carry before train departure.

Existing technology requires significant labor input. By employing modern sensors and cameras, combined with artificial intelligence, the inspection process will become automated.

Information about wagon and cargo parameters will be provided to the wagon master in real-time through a dedicated application.

This will significantly reduce the time required to prepare a train for its journey—down to 60 minutes instead of several hours.

The project is set to last 27 months and will be completed by the summer of 2026. CargoBeamer is responsible for developing the necessary infrastructure at the terminal, including automation and sensors.

The IML Institute will handle issues related to artificial intelligence and software, while SGKV will provide analysis of technological processes and coordinate all stages of the project.

Previously, IML and SGKV have worked on projects automating similar tasks.
