Cambodia has purchased 11 used diesel trains of the KiHa 183 series from the Japanese railway company JR Hokkaido, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

These trains, capable of speeds up to 110 km/h, will replace locomotive traction on the Phnom Penh – Poipet – Sihanoukville line.

Each is designed to carry 64 passengers, with ticket prices around 9 US dollars.
The trains, previously operated on 1067-millimeter gauge lines in Japan, will be adapted for Cambodia’s 1000-millimeter gauge railway network.
They are scheduled to begin operation in June 2024.
These diesel trains were first produced in 1981 and, in addition to JR Hokkaido, were also used by JR Kyushu.
The total number of KiHa 183 series trains built is 36, the last of which was retired in March 2023.
Previously, JR Hokkaido also provided these trains for use on railways in Thailand, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
