Reduced Costs and Increased Efficiency for Caltrain

Initially, Caltrain estimated its annual electricity costs for the fleet at $19.5 million. However, updated calculations show lower-than-expected energy usage, with weekday consumption at 207 MWh and weekends at 175 MWh. These savings have adjusted the annual electricity cost projection to $16.5 million.

The agency also benefits from California’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program, receiving $6 million annually in energy credits. These savings, combined with reduced electricity costs, make operating the electric fleet more affordable than running diesel-powered trains.

Caltrain Leads in Sustainable Energy Use

Caltrain operates its fleet on 100% renewable energy while returning 23% of consumed electricity to the grid. This efficiency is possible due to regenerative braking, an innovative technology that converts kinetic energy into electricity during braking.

Recovered energy is transferred via the Overhead Contact System (OCS) and distributed to other trains or back to the grid at no additional cost. Despite these advances, current legislation does not require reimbursement for this regenerated energy.

Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard emphasized how these advancements align with the agency’s mission to enhance public transit. “We are committed to providing state-of-the-art, sustainable transportation that benefits everyone,” she stated.
