Electric trains will continue running every 15 minutes during peak hours and every 30 minutes during other times, including weekends. This service remains central to Caltrain’s electrification initiative.

Caltrain Capital Plan Prioritizes Safety Investments

The capital budget emphasizes critical maintenance and safety enhancements. Key investments include solar markers, AI-driven grade crossing systems, and delineator posts to increase safety.

These upgrades support Caltrain’s long-term commitment to modern, efficient, and safe regional rail service across the Bay Area.

Caltrain Faces Major Deficit Beyond FY2026

While the FY2026 budget is balanced, Caltrain expects an average annual deficit of $75 million through FY2035. Officials warned that without new funding, service cuts and station closures may be required.

Governor Newsom’s revised budget could further cut $10.4 million from Caltrain’s FY2026 operating funds, deepening the agency’s challenges.

To respond, Caltrain will raise base fares by $0.25 on July 1 and explore alternative revenue strategies. Officials are also working with regional partners to secure stable funding sources.

Without sustained investment, the system may struggle to support future growth and maintain reliable operations.
