California has awarded $50,000 to the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority to expand public train access to Allensworth State Park for underserved students and communities ahead of key commemorations

The funding, provided by the Parks California Route to Parks program, supports the Visit Allensworth California Heritage initiative. It will cover Amtrak San Joaquins train tickets and meals for participating students.

California Grant Improves Access to Allensworth State Park

Allensworth is the first town in California to be founded, financed, and governed entirely by African Americans. The program connects students with this history while promoting sustainable rail travel.

Amtrak San Joaquins will make special stops at the park on June 14 for the Juneteenth celebration and again on October 11 for the rededication event. These visits aim to enhance historical awareness and community engagement.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park offers guided tours and interactive displays that spotlight Black leadership, resilience, and independence in early 20th-century California.

California Initiative Promotes Heritage and Public Rail Use

The grant also demonstrates how California supports equitable transportation. SJJPA is using the funds to reach students in historically marginalized areas with limited access to educational field trips.

“This grant will help us grow the Visit Allensworth program and introduce more students to California’s powerful heritage,” said Stacey Mortensen, executive director of SJJPA.

She added that riding Amtrak San Joaquins allows students to discover the advantages of clean, efficient public transportation while exploring important state history.

By investing in both cultural access and transportation equity, California strengthens its commitment to inclusive community development and educational outreach.
