01.04.2025
Germany’s Federal Railway Authority approved CAF Nexio operations starting in 2025. This decision ends five years of talks for Schönbuch Railway near Stuttgart. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Spanish company CAF signed a contract with operator Zweckverband Schönbuchbahn in 2017. It will deliver nine electric trains and provide maintenance, later adding three more.

The operator aimed to launch new trains back in 2021. But EBA delayed the start due to safety concerns over the braking system.
Now the company will replace diesel Regio-Shuttle RS1 trains with modern electric ones. This transition begins mid-2025, and passengers will notice improvements.
New trains feature three cars and measure 39 meters in length. They hold 251 passengers, including 90 seats, enhancing travel comfort.
Each train carries six engines with a 1080 kW output for a 15 kV network. Thus, electric trains reach 100 km/h and ensure smooth rides.
CAF Nexio: A Step Toward Regional Modernization
EBA’s approval paves the way for upgrading Stuttgart’s transport network. Because new trains cut emissions and boost transport efficiency.
Operator Zweckverband Schönbuchbahn finalizes preparations for launching electric trains. The company runs tests to guarantee reliable service on regional routes.
CAF Nexio Enhance Ecology and Service
These upgrades will impact thousands of daily railway passengers. And switching to electricity ensures eco-friendliness and convenience in travel.
Manufacturer CAF supports the project and trains the operator’s staff. Its experts monitor train conditions and assist with technology integration.
Updating transport meets modern standards and ecological goals. So Schönbuch Railway will set an example of successful change in Germany.
The launch of new trains marks a new era for Stuttgart-area transport. Local residents await their first trips on CAF Nexio mid-year.
