British Steel has secured a £500 million contract with Network Rail to deliver rail tracks over the next five years, strengthening its position in the UK’s infrastructure market. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The agreement includes an option to extend for an additional three years. Most of the rails will support maintenance and renewal across the national network.

British Steel supports Scunthorpe and plans for greener operations

The deal brings crucial support to the company’s Scunthorpe plant, which was saved from closure in April after government intervention. The site uses a basic oxygen steelmaking method involving high-speed oxygen blasts over molten iron mixed with scrap metal.

This method removes impurities and converts the mix into usable steel. A water-cooled lance directs the oxygen stream, enhancing efficiency while meeting modern production standards.

In October, British Steel launched a carbon capture trial at the same plant. The initiative aims to reduce emissions by integrating new environmental technologies into existing operations.

British Steel and emerging low-carbon steel technologies

Efforts to reduce emissions across the industry continue. Binding Solutions Ltd has developed a patented process to create cold agglomerated pellets (CAPs) that don’t require high temperatures for production.

This cold bonding method replaces sintering and induration, cutting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur oxide emissions significantly. The technology also simplifies production, lowers capital costs, and boosts energy efficiency.

In addition, this process converts low-grade iron ore fines into materials usable in blast furnaces, improving resource utilization. Such innovation complements British Steel’s efforts to modernize and reduce its carbon footprint.

British Steel’s latest contract not only secures future jobs but also reinforces its transition toward more sustainable production methods. As the UK shifts to greener infrastructure, companies embracing clean technologies gain a competitive edge.
