Britain Upgrades First Hydrogen-powered Locomotive in Kidderminster
19.03.2025
Vanguard STS upgrades Britain’s first Hydrogen-powered locomotive at Severn Valley Railway depot in Kidderminster. The company, a Birmingham University subsidiary, completes this eco-friendly project swiftly. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Engineers transform a three-axle Class 08 shunter, built by British Rail in Derby, into HydroShunter. Originally manufactured in 1959 and retired in 2007, the locomotive now features modern technology.

HydroShunter replaces its old diesel engine with an 80 kW Toyota hydrogen fuel cell. Additionally, it includes 230 kWh lead-acid batteries, delivering 250 kW power and 20-hour range.
The locomotive achieves speeds up to 24 km/h with a 60 kg hydrogen tank onboard. This upgrade marks a significant step toward sustainable rail transport in the UK.
Hydrogen-powered Locomotive Boosts Green Rail Solutions
Vanguard STS executes its second hydrogen project with this innovative Hydrogen-powered locomotive conversion. Previously, the company tests two HydroFlex electric trains with Ballard fuel cells since 2020.
HydroShunter showcases advanced engineering, but HydroFlex trains rely on American-made Ballard technology instead. Thus, Vanguard STS diversifies its approach to hydrogen adoption in rail systems.
Britain leads in eco-friendly rail solutions, and this project highlights its commitment to innovation. Furthermore, it reduces carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals effectively.
Hydrogen-powered Locomotive Sets New Industry Standards
The Kidderminster depot proves ideal for such upgrades, supporting Vanguard STS’s ambitious plans. Consequently, the company strengthens its reputation in green transportation technology worldwide.
