The bridge will carry six lanes of road traffic and two railway tracks simultaneously. Its capacity will reach 6,000 vehicles and 200 trains per day, significantly reducing travel times.
Bridge and the project’s importance for the region
This project will become part of the TEN-T Scandinavian–Mediterranean Corridor, which connects Helsinki and Valletta. Therefore, the bridge will provide Sicily with faster access to the mainland and boost the region’s competitiveness.
Construction is being managed by the Eurolink consortium, led by Italian company Webuild, with participation from Spain’s Sacyr and Japan’s IHI. This international collaboration ensures the use of advanced technologies and strict quality control.
Currently, ferries handle transportation between Sicily and the mainland, but they can no longer keep up with growing passenger demand. The new bridge will solve this issue, eliminating delays and making travel more convenient and reliable.
What is the bridge over the Strait of Messina?
It is a major infrastructure project that will connect Sicily to mainland Italy, providing permanent transport access and high capacity for passengers and freight.
When will construction of the bridge start?
Construction is set to begin soon, following the completion of all preparatory procedures and approval of the project’s implementation schedule.
How will the bridge impact the regional economy?
The bridge will accelerate transport flows, increase freight volumes, and create new jobs, positively impacting local businesses and economic growth.
