Brescia signs major deal with Manelli for tram construction

Manelli Impresa SpA will manage the civil works, finalize the design, and implement safety measures. Its share of the contract is valued at €161 million, including depot construction at Fiera and Pendolina.

The project will use modern, energy-efficient infrastructure. About 72% of the route will run on dedicated lanes to ensure reliable service. Overhead lines will power 8.2 km of the track, while 3.1 km will rely on onboard batteries to protect heritage areas.

Brescia partners with Hitachi Rail and Alstom for system delivery

Hitachi Rail will supply 18 advanced trams and install both onboard and trackside communication systems. Its work is valued at €77 million. The trams will be produced in Reggio Calabria and will follow the SCAI framework.

Each tram will carry 216 passengers and feature 52 seats, anti-collision systems, noise control, and ergonomic layouts. The vehicles will use 98% recyclable materials and integrate battery-powered segments, Eco-Drive algorithms, and energy-recovery braking.

Alstom will handle traction systems, power distribution, overhead contact lines, and signaling, along with traffic lights and street lighting. Its contribution totals €88 million and supports safe and efficient operations.

The tramway will improve access to the FS Station and better connect high-density districts. Officials expect it to reduce car use and increase quality of life in Brescia’s central and outer zones.

Sergio Onofrio Manelli stressed the project’s impact on mobility and urban renewal. Hitachi’s Luca D’Aquila emphasized its clean-technology leadership, while Alstom’s Michele Viale underlined their commitment to sustainable transport systems.
