Brazilian passenger rail projects are advancing rapidly, with major financing approvals and contracts driving modernization. Key developments include metro expansions, light rail improvements, and infrastructure investments. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Brasília Metro Expansion Boosts Connectivity
Brazilian passenger rail projects gained momentum with the approval of a ₦400mn ($65mn) loan for Brasília’s metro. The project extends line No. 1 by 3.6km and adds two modern stations.

The total investment of ₦445mn underscores its significance in addressing urban mobility challenges. Upon completion, 9,840 new passengers will join the metro system’s daily 160,000 commuters, reducing congestion.
The consortium CG-JFJ, comprising CG Construções and JFJ Tecnologia em Instalações Elétricas, will lead the construction. The project aims to cut annual CO₂ emissions by 7,800 tons, improving sustainability.
Light Rail Upgrades in Piauí State
Modernization of light rail in Teresina, Piauí, marks another major step for Brazilian passenger rail projects. The government announced a ₦335mn investment to enhance stations and acquire three new rail cars.
The federal cities ministry and Caixa Econômica Federal will contribute funding, with the state government supporting upgrades. Scheduled for a two-year completion, this project aims to transform urban mobility.
São Paulo Expands Subway and Light Rail Systems
São Paulo is a cornerstone of Brazilian passenger rail projects. In December, China’s CRRC won a ₦3.10bn contract to supply 44 trains for lines No. 2-green and No. 3-red.
The subway operator is finalizing contract details, with initial train delivery expected in 21 months. Additionally, São Paulo is auctioning a 25-year public-private partnership (PPP) for light rail lines totaling 124km.
This contract includes ₦1bn annual operational expenses and ₦1.49bn in yearly compensation. The planned 22.6km line extension will enhance accessibility, with 10 new stations planned.
Brazilian passenger rail projects are transforming infrastructure nationwide. These strategic investments aim to reduce traffic, cut emissions, and deliver more efficient urban transportation options.
