This 227% increase compared to the previous year highlights growing interest in interstate rail travel. The train offers a convenient alternative to driving or flying in the Midwest.

Amtrak President Roger Harris noted that Borealis succeeded thanks to strong collaboration, providing safe, efficient, and reliable connections between major cities in the region.

Borealis Expands Access for Smaller Communities

The route includes both metropolitan hubs and small towns previously underserved by rail. Residents now benefit from better access to jobs, education, and tourism.

Minnesota Transportation Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger emphasized the importance of state investment and expressed optimism for continued growth. She said Borealis has proven the value of accessible public transit.

Wisconsin Transportation Secretary Kristina Boardman added that the launch marked the state’s first passenger rail expansion in 20 years. She noted steady ridership growth, especially in smaller communities.

Borealis Train Services and Future Outlook

Borealis departs daily—midday from St. Paul and morning from Chicago. Travelers enjoy wide seating, onboard dining, and scenic views of the Mississippi River.

Preliminary data shows ridership growth at nearly all stations. Amtrak will release full-year results once the monthly reporting cycle concludes.

Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi stated that Borealis’ early success demonstrates strong regional demand. She confirmed that Illinois will work with partner states to explore new service expansions across the Midwest.
