Union bosses hailed the deal as “guaranteeing members more support” – rather than just drawing a line under pay. They emphasized the upgrades to employee well-being at work and at home.
BMWED gets ready for the industry of the future
BMWED National President Tony Cardwell commended members for their solidarity in discussions. “This is an agreement that puts our members in a position to navigate these changes in our sector with confidence, including a possible future merger that could come with significant change in our operations,” he added.
Rail industry analysts say such deals are often a benchmark for other Class I railroads. By modernizing benefits and providing competitive wages, they can attract and retain the best talent and make their businesses more resilient.
In the meantime, the BMWED will continue to engage with members going forward to address new challenges. In addition, union representatives will continue to closely watch the direction industry changes take, to ensure that the contract maintains its role as a shield and sword for employees.
This ratification represents a fresh beginning for Union Pacific and another chapter in our effort to rebuild Union Pacific, and rebuild it right, for our employees. Agents are encouraged that these investments will help improve the delivery experience and overall customer satisfaction within the freight network.
