Battery Powered Class 08e: A Step Toward Zero-Emission Rail Transport
The Class 08 locomotive (08296), owned by Heidelberg Materials, will undergo conversion to a fully battery-powered vehicle. Positive Traction will equip the locomotive with six battery pods, a new lightweight body, and advanced control systems. Scheduled for delivery in summer, this upgraded locomotive will ensure efficient and eco-friendly operations.

Vincent Pitt, Heidelberg Materials’ Area General Manager, emphasized the locomotive’s trial success. The prototype handled 1,000-tonne aggregate trains with ease on challenging terrain. This project directly supports the company’s commitment to reducing scope 3 emissions by 15% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Battery Powered Class 08e features advanced technology, enabling continuous operation during demanding shifts. With over 600 kWh of energy, the locomotive can complete long hours of work with power to spare. Positive Traction also upgraded the auxiliary and traction systems to boost performance and reliability.
