State Funds Push BART Silicon Valley Phase II Forward

During its latest meeting in Sacramento, the California Transportation Commission approved $100 million in funding for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). Of that total, $25 million comes from the 2025 Local Partnership Competitive Program (LPP), which rewards projects with strong local backing.

The remaining $75 million was allocated through the 2025 Solutions for Congested Corridors Program (SCCP), which supports sustainable traffic reduction efforts.

VTA recently announced plans to switch tunnel contractors to better align with budgetary targets, making this grant especially timely. While VTA directly submitted its LPP application, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission nominated the agency for SCCP funding, reaffirming regional commitment to the project.

BART Silicon Valley Phase II Set to Transform San José Transit

General Manager and CEO Carolyn Gonot called the funding a major step toward delivering long-promised infrastructure. “This investment reflects Silicon Valley’s dedication to efficient, sustainable transportation,” she said. “We’re staying laser-focused on delivering value and accountability to taxpayers.”

The BART Silicon Valley Phase II extension will add six miles of new service into downtown San José. The estimated $12.7 billion cost will be covered by a combination of local, state, and federal funds, including $5.1 billion projected from the Federal Transit Administration’s New Starts program.

By expanding regional connectivity and setting new standards in sustainable development, the VTA is pushing BART Silicon Valley Phase II toward becoming a transformative piece of the Bay Area’s future.
