BART Introduces Contactless Payments for Easier Transit Access
23.08.2025
BART has introduced contactless payment options, making commuting faster and more convenient for riders across the Bay Area. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

BART Expands Payment Options
Starting August 20, riders can use their contactless credit or debit cards to enter the system, along with Apple Pay and Google Pay. This update removes the need for a Clipper card, saving time during boarding.

BART General Manager Bob Powers explained that the upgrade simplifies the experience for visitors and infrequent riders. And because the system supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, most riders can start using the service immediately without extra setup.
BART Leads Transit Innovation
The introduction of tap-and-ride technology reflects BART’s commitment to modernizing the transit experience. It follows recent upgrades such as next-generation fare gates, new Fleet of the Future trains, and improved safety efforts across stations.
Currently, riders using contactless cards pay the standard adult fare. Those who qualify for discounted programs must still rely on their physical or digital Clipper card to receive reduced rates. And while transfer discounts are not yet available with contactless payment, they will roll out as other agencies update their systems.
Passengers should remember to use the same card or device when tapping in and out. Families traveling together need to ensure that each person uses a separate card or device for entry.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and BART are collaborating to implement the next-generation Clipper system. Soon, nearly two dozen Bay Area transit agencies will accept contactless payments, creating a seamless payment network across the region. And once the system is fully integrated, riders will enjoy full access to discounts and transfers.
BART officials confirmed that more upgrades are planned in the coming months. So, whether commuting daily or visiting the Bay Area, passengers can expect a smoother, faster, and more user-friendly transit experience.
