Construction began on a new line stretching from northern Chamartín to a 3.5-kilometer tunnel reaching the airport. Despite structural challenges, work continues without disrupting existing services.
The government allocated €63 million (around $68 million) to this project, aiming to boost nationwide rail-air connectivity and simplify access to Spain’s busiest airport terminal.
Barajas airport high-speed train link will boost national travel
Chamartín station is already a hub where 10 Cercanías lines converge. Integrating high-speed service will strengthen Madrid’s role as a transport center and support seamless connections to domestic destinations.
Modernization continues across the capital’s network. In 2025, Metro Line 6 will be fully automated, featuring driverless trains and platform doors to cut delays and improve safety.
Chamartín and Barajas upgrades show Madrid’s rail ambitions
Chamartín station is undergoing a €1 billion ($1.08 billion) overhaul to double capacity and improve operations. These upgrades reinforce the government’s vision of smarter, faster, and greener public transport.
The Barajas airport high-speed train initiative aligns with Spain’s long-term mobility goals, making rail and air travel more integrated, sustainable, and competitive for millions of passengers.
