Alstom’s Avelia Stream Nordic X80 Recognized for Innovation and Sustainability

Alstom has won the prestigious Red Dot Award 2025 for the Avelia Stream Nordic X80, a high-speed train engineered for extreme Scandinavian weather. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

It operates reliably from –40°C to +35°C and features an aerodynamic design, regenerative braking, and lightweight construction to optimize energy use. With seating for 270 passengers, the train also includes designated areas for bicycles, strollers, and wheelchairs.

Its pressure-tight carbody ensures a quiet ride even at 200 km/h, while its ability to run through 80 cm of snow makes it ideal for northern Europe. According to Maria Signal Martebo, Managing Director of Alstom Sweden, “The Avelia Stream Nordic X80 represents the future of sustainable and accessible rail mobility in the Nordics.”

Engineered for Harsh Climates and Everyday Comfort

Inside, the train balances comfort and functionality. Quiet zones and social spaces meet diverse passenger needs, while automatic climate control and panoramic visibility enhance the driver’s experience. Extra-wide doors and step-free access support all passengers, including those with reduced mobility.

Helene Frahm, Head of Design at Västtrafik, emphasized the broader vision: “Our custom-designed trains support a major investment in rail for western Sweden. This award confirms our success in aligning design, sustainability, and passenger focus.”

High Standards in Safety, Efficiency, and Materials

Built on Alstom’s proven high-speed platform, the Avelia Stream Nordic X80 integrates the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) for cross-border safety and interoperability. Its electrodynamic braking system recovers energy, while all materials meet strict REACH and rail sector environmental regulations.

With its blend of climate resilience, energy efficiency, and inclusive design, the Avelia Stream Nordic X80 sets a new benchmark for modern rail transport in northern Europe.
